Rainy day places to check out in London

Rainy day places to check out in London

With the weather alternating between glorious sunshine and heat and grey skies with rain, it can be difficult deciding what to do, especially if you had the barbecue of your dreams all planned out when the huge dark clouds start rolling in. Don’t panic if it starts raining and you think you’ll be bored, we’ve got some ideas of how to keep busy no matter the weather.

Check out a weird museum

Don’t head to the National History Museum straight away if it rains as this can be packed with tourists and other shelter seekers alike, instead try somewhere with a bit of a twist like the Grant Museum of Zoology. While not great for little kids as there are plenty of skulls, pickled animals and bisected heads on show, you may learn some fascinating facts about the animal kingdom and find yourself losing track of time until the sun starts shining again.

See an art installation for the King Of Pop

Loved Michael Jackson? The National Portrait Gallery has the perfect day out for you. Running until October 21st, this exhibition showcases the effect of the music icon on some of the leading artists and was opened to coincide with what would have been MJ’s 60th birthday.

Treat yourself to something sweet

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of the famous Choccywoccydoodah, a willy wonka world for everyone who can’t get enough of chocolate. Responsible for making some of the biggest and most spectacular chocolate sculptures and cakes for famous clientele, you’ll leave here with a lighter wallet but a full stomach.

Three Uber-Instgrammable Summer Foods You Need To Try

Three Uber-Instgrammable Summer Foods You Need To Try

Summer is all about new, fun experience whether that’s trying out a new sport, visiting somewhere you’ve never been before or trying some delicious food. If you want help with the last one we’ve got just the list for you:

Poke

This is a Hawaiian speciality and is pronounce ‘po-kay.’ Poke is for serious seafood fans as it’s often raw fish like tuna or cooked octopus and is often served over rice with other delicious ingredients. Fresh and healthy!

Corn but not as you know it

You may wonder how corn on the cob can ever be worthy of the ‘gram, but this is Elote, a Mexican version of the dish which is covered in everything from sour cream, mayonnaise and spices to turn a boring cob into a flavour fiesta!

Charcoal anything

A black ice-cream may not look the most appetising but Instagrammers are going mad for any foods infused with charcoal and it’s signature murky colour. It’s been seen in everything from soft-serve to donuts, burger buns and pasta but just be careful. In moderate amounts charcoal won’t harm you, but an excessive intake can even put you in the hospital!

Three ‘bad’ foods that are actually good for you

Three ‘bad’ foods that are actually good for you

Chocolate

Now we’re not suggesting you reach for a giant bar of dairy milk, but dark chocolate can have many health benefits. Full of flavanols which have antioxidant properties and linked to improving vascular function and lowering blood pressure among other health boosters, eating dark chocolate with over 70% cocoa solids is a perfect sweet treat.

Pasta

Don’t recoil in horror the next time someone suggests a bowl of bolognaise for tea, believe it or not pasta can be good for you! In 2016 in Nutrition and Diabetes, the diets of 14,000 people were examined and the research found that those who ate pasta more regularly also had lower BMI’s and smaller waistlines than their carb-fearing counterparts.

Having a Mediterranean style diet which includes eating pasta and even heart-healthy olive oil is commonly reported to be one of the healthiest you can have and has been linked to reduced risks of heart-disease and cognitive decline, but try and stick to healthier pasta sauce options and avoid the heavy cream based ones!

Wine

This one may be something you have heard of before but wine, particularly red wine can be good for you in moderation. The grapes red wine is made from are packed with beneficial antioxidants including resveratrol and proanthocyanidins which are believed to be responsible for helping to reduce inflammation and preventing heart disease and cancer.

Just like with most foods though, how much you consume plays the most critical factor in aiding your health, as having too much wine can actually increase your chances of heart disease. It is recommended that women should drink no more than a glass a day while men can have two.
