How to avoid a yeast infection

With three out of four women suffering from a vaginal yeast infection at some point in their lifetime, knowing how to avoid it is knowledge we could all use.

Because each woman is different and each woman’s vaginal microbiome is unique, there is no quick fix: what works for one person, might not for another.

So generally:

1. After you work out, change your clothes. Yeast love warm, dark, damp places; don’t give them a home.

2. Change underwear in the middle of the day.

3. Avoid cleaning inside your vagina – think of it as a self-cleaning oven.

NHS to introduce mental health checks for new dads

With one in 10 men thought to experience anxiety or depression in the first six months after the birth of their baby, NHS England has announced that new fathers and fathers-to-be will be offered mental health checks if their partner is suffering anxiety, psychosis or postnatal depression.

While it is well documented that pregnant women and and new mothers can experience mental health problems, up until now, little attention has been paid to the men folk.

NHS England says this help may take the form of peer support, couples’ behavioural therapy sessions, family and parenting interventions in community perinatal mental health settings, or other talking therapies.

Are you in a sex recession?

Despite the easing of taboos: anal sex is no longer considered inappropriate, it is in fact the fifth base, and with an ever increasing rise of hookup apps, we Brits should be in the midst of a sexual revolution.

So how come so many of us are in a sex recession?

The last poll by British National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) showed the number of times we’re having sex each month has dropped from five to three.

The reason for this?

Experts believe the economic recession, money worries, stress and busy lifestyles are the main factors responsible for the decline in our sexual appetites. That and our new found love of taking technology to bed, not a partner.

3 reasons why you should consider therapy

Everyone has a different reason for wanting to see a therapist. But if you’re thinking ‘therapy isn’t for me’, you might want to think again, no issue is too small or too big to benefit from therapy.

 1. You can’t vent solely to friends and family. You’ll soon find yourself alienated and ostracised. Your friends are your friends, not unpaid shrinks. Plus their solutions will more than likely be what worked for them, not you.

2. Mental health care is just as important as physical health care. You’d go to the doctor if your leg was hurting, why not see someone if your feelings are hurting?

3. Resilience can only strengthen if we learn new coping strategies.

Top tips for re-styling your home on a budget

1. Use chalkboard paint on the inside of cupboards. Use these for handy shopping lists or just somewhere for the kids to entertain themselves.

2. Do your own painting. Don’t pay through the nose for someone else to come and redecorate, host a painting party: turn up the tunes and enlist the help of friends – many hands make light work.

3. Let family and friends know if you are looking for a certain item of furniture. You’ll be surprised how many have old stuff sitting in their garage. More than likely they’d be happy for you to take it off their hands.

How to dress like a French woman

There is no denying it: French women are the epitome of style.

But with a few key pieces, you too can look effortless and je ne sais quoi.

You’ll need:

  • A sharp shouldered blazer over a crisp white shirt. A tailored blazer over jeans and a shirt will instantly add sophistication. If the shirt is oversized, it will scream ‘I just left my boyfriend’s’.
  • Oversized sunglasses. Of course.
  • A cross body bag that is both effortless and stylish, something with a bit of bling will add instant glamour to your old jeans.
  • A stacked heel boot. There’s no need for your feet to be uncomfortable if the rest of you isn’t.

How to get ready in a hurry

How to get ready in a hurry

If you’re trying to get ready and look great in less than half an hour, every minute counts.

Choose a simple, one-piece outfit such as a dress or jumpsuit and you can cut the fuss when it comes to getting dressed quickly.

It might seem obvious, but choose an outfit that complements your coat or jacket to reduce additional complications of having to coordinate multiple items of clothing.

If you only wear trousers or jeans, team these with a two-in-one top, such as a sweater with a shirt underneath it.

Top tip: sprinkle baby powder on your legs to help you to slide your trousers on more quickly.

4 reasons why we love shampoo bars

  1. These little pucks are package free. No need to worry if the bottle is recyclable: there is no bottle.
  2. The shampoo bars are very concentrated meaning a little goes a long way: they may cost more than your regular shampoo, but they’ll out last it and them some.
  3. They’re great for regular travelers as you don’t need to worry about taking them in your carry on luggage: no 100ml maximum limit here!
  4. Shampoo bars are multifunctional: wash your body with yours, and your clothes, and your dog.
