Why do we sleep?

For something that we spend almost one-third of our lives doing, not many of us know why this relaxing past time is essential to our survival. Sleep is a biological necessity, much like drinking water and breathing air.

Sleep serves numerous purposes:

  • It modulates body temperature
  • It helps conserve energy
  • It allows us to maintain an adequate weight
  • It ensures a normal immune system

But most importantly of all, it allows our brain to keep working. Without sleep, our brain starts to shut down. Whilst no person has been known to die of sleep deprivation, studies in animals have shown it to happen.

How to wear green this winter

There’s something about the colour green; it’s an elegant colour that makes even the dreariest of days pop with vigour. Plus the fact it is a winter colour only enhances its appeal. And with so many shades to choose from, picking just one is tough.

Depending on your skin tone, choose from the muted hues of seafoam to the bright chartreuses and vivid shamrock shades.

Don’t be afraid to wear green – dare to be brave and make a statement. Go all out with a green dress combined with brown boots, or pair an oversized sweater with a mute midi skirt, or simply layer soft pieces to an outfit as a highlighter.

Getting out with your new baby and toddler

Gone are the relatively easy days of just you and the toddler. Now you have a new baby to contend with too.

Even though it might seem like you’ve taken a thousand steps back, you haven’t. The key is in preparation.

  1. Prepare the night before. Remember you’ll be feeding, changing and entertaining two now, and as they’re different ages, they’ll need different things.
  2. Know when to leave the house. Time it so you head out just after your baby’s feed and nappy change.
  3. Don’t go too far. This is important. It’s early days, so get the small wins in.

The working girl’s detox breakfast

So many of us would love to stop the world and hop off in January, but sadly that isn’t possible for the vast majority of us.

So to try to mitigate against some of the damage caused by excess in December, start your day right with a hearty breakfast.

Combine ¼ cup oats, 2 tbsp quinoa flakes, ½ tsp coconut sugar, ½ tsp chia seeds, ½ tsp hemp seeds, ½ tsp flax seeds, pinch cinnamon, and salt.

Add ¾ cup of hot water, stir, and cover. Let sit for about 2 minutes.

3 indoor play ideas

1. Box clever. You can’t beat the simplicity of a big cardboard box. Turn them into cars, trains, dens or just enjoy hiding in them.

2. Drum up fun in the kitchen with saucepans and a wooden spoon. Lots of noise, limited mess, and lots of smiles.

3. Stepping stones. Spark their imagination by laying cut out pieces of cardboard in a random path across the room. Pretend the carpet is an ocean full of sharks and that your toddler has to cross the room without falling in. Mix it up when they get bored by hopping or jumping.

How to find a therapist who is right for you

  1. Ask your personal network. Word of mouth is the most reliable way to receive good recommendations.
  2. Most therapists have a presence on the internet. Simply do a basic search for a therapist in your area. If you know what kind of therapy you want, include those particular keywords.
  3. Set up appointments with a few different people. This is especially important if you have never been to therapy before. In order to find out what works best for you, you’ll want to experience the different spaces and different people to see what fits.

Why dry shampoo won’t let you down

Why do we persistently love dry shampoo?

Probably because it instantly revs up second, third, and even fourth-day hair, but also:

  1. It adds gorgeous texture, soaks up all that excess oil and is also one of the more brilliant styling products known to womankind. That and it magically dissolves into nothing all the while adding volume and shine.
  2. Plus it’s really easy to use: simply spray onto your hair, gently comb through from roots to ends with your fingers, and… no, that’s it.
  3. It’s also brilliant for almost any style.
