Weekend fun days

If you’re after fun days out at the weekends without having to spend loads of cash, take a look at our 4 suggestions.

  1. Take a look at national organisations such as Woodland Trust, Wildlife Trust and Canal River Trust to find free nature reserves, woodlands and waterways to explore.
  2. Register with the Ramblers and download their handy Rambler Routes. Some are less than 3 miles long, so great for little legs.
  3. Take the train and explore further afield. Check out daysoutguide.co.uk for hundreds of 2 for 1 offers on attractions around the UK.
  4. Pop along to your local museum, some even have interactive experiences for kids, such as the V&A Museum of Childhood.

Lounge wear to look good in

Cosie comfies like tracksuit bottoms and cashmere, once the preserve of the indoor realm, have had a renaissance. Granted slouchy t shirts and baggy, faded sweatpants may have to stay hidden away, but rejoice, tracksuits, onesies and hoodies are in fashion. As are utility-style trousers, trainers and super-soft knits. A general rule of thumb is thus: the comfier the better.

Don’t believe us? Just take a sneak peak at one Victoria Beckham; the woman who once wouldn’t be seen dead in anything other than stilettos, was papped recently in a roll neck knit, cropped trousers and Adidas trainers. If VB can do it. You can too.

Food that boosts your productivity

We’ve all been there, staring at the clock and wondering how it can be showing 9.30am when we’ve been sitting behind our desk for what feels like hours.

Rather than mainline caffeine, try these foods instead:

1. Salmon. Fatty fishes are excellent for promoting productivity, and salmon is one of the best. Enjoy it in your lunch time sarnie or on a bed of leaves.

2. Berries. Snack on antioxidant-rich foods like berries which are excellent for increasing memory. The darker the berry, the higher the antioxidant property it has.

3. Dark chocolate. The magnesium in this sweet treat is a natural stress reliever.

How to figure out what property you can afford

Sadly what we want and what we can afford are not always the same thing.

What you can afford typically rests on what you can borrow. Every lender will have slightly different ways of calculating how much they will lend you, so to put yourself in good stead:

•Build up a sizeable deposit.

•Ensure you’ve got a good credit rating.

•Check your regular expenditure to make sure you’re not currently living beyond your means.

3 things to do on a rainy day

If you’re constantly searching for ways to entertain yourself (or your family) on a rainy day, here are a few relatively inexpensive ideas:

1. For small people, create an indoor treasure hunt with a yummy prize at the end of it. Have them sit little tasks, or figure out simple clues along the way.

2. Bake with your children and whip up that yummy prize for the treasure hunt.

3. Deep condition your hair and slather on a face mask, and relax.

What to prepare before the baby arrives

If you’re trying to find things to keep your mind occupied in the final month before the baby arrives, why not batch cook food to eat in the weeks and months after they make their arrival.

Quick and easy dishes to make include:

•Soup. Throw any veg in a pot and to make a heartier dish, just add pasta.

•Stew. One pot recipes are ideal. Serve with salad for fresh veg or bulk out with a tin of beans to stretch it to two nights.

•Curry. A versatile freezer favourite for a reason.

6 ways to boost your fertility

If you’re trying to conceive, how many of these faux pas are you aware of?

•Check your weight. If you’re significantly over or underweight, it can reduce your chances of conceiving.

•Eat a balanced diet. This is a diet that contains the essential vitamins: folic acid (for the baby) and B vitamins (important for both ovulation and foetal development).

•Avoid Vitamin A.

•Cut down or avoid swordfish, shark and marlin and eat no more than two tuna steaks a week.

•Quit smoking and reduce alcohol intake.

•Up your sex levels.

7 Vegan alternatives to everyday staples

If you’re committed to living a cruelty free life, knowing what you should put in your shopping basket in advance is going to make the transition much easier.

•Swap dairy for dairy free. Try oat, almond, coconut or soya milk.

•Exchange meat for quorn. A cheap, environmentally friendly alternative that is packed with more protein than the animal kind.

•Use soaked chia seeds or mashed bananas in your bakes instead of eggs to bind the batter.

•Try frozen bananas as an alternative to ice cream.

•Pick agave syrup over honey.

•Eat nutritional yeast in lieu of cheese.

•Make your pudding with cashew cream instead of double cream.

Turn your rented house into a home

If, like the vast majority of us, you’re a fully paid up member of Generation Rent, there is no reason why you can’t turn your rented house into a home, just because you don’t own it.

Here are 3 ideas for you to implement and create a space that is uniquely yours.

1. Add a splash of colour with bold furnishings rather than wall paint.

2. Invest in freestanding flexible storage options like stackable, moveable wallshelves (that don’t require wall fastenings to keep them in place – win win).

3. Introduce your personality through plants. If you can’t have a pet, have a houseplant. Or several.

One simple way to improve your sleep

Quality of sleep is more important than duration of sleep. The easiest way to get good quality sleep is to get in tune with your body clock. Interestingly, our bodies do different things at different times during our sleep cycles: REM sleep is linked to learning and memory, whereas growth hormones are released during deep sleep.

So if you want to exact all the benefits of sleep, understand the different sleep phases and ensure you get adequate of each.

If you are always groggy when your alarm goes off, invest in a bodyclock alarm clock or app that will wake you at the end of a sleep cycle, as close to your desired get up time as possible.
