4 items to freshen up your 2019 wardrobe

  1. Denim jacket.

Denim jackets are back in vogue. Slot yours under an overcoat, or just tandem with a T-shirt when it warms up.

  1. Anorak.

You heard correctly. Anoraks are high on the fashion agenda in 2019, with labels like Aimé Leon Dore giving them instant street cred.

  1. A hint of purple.

Everyone from Paul Smith to Prada, was flashing purple at LFW. Slip yours in via a simple t-shirt to work the look.

  1. Slip on boots.

Slip on boots with a thick sole are all you need to saunter into Spring.

Your mindset is key to your mental health

Toxic masculinity is detrimental to good mental health, says the American Psychological Association. And they aren’t just talking about it being harmful for women, it has been proven to hurt men too.

In order to start combatting what has previously been considered the norm, views on what constitutes masculinity have to change.

What constitutes masculine is just as fluid as what constitutes feminine. There is no benchmark, there is no normal.

The solution? A good place to start is to understand that men are complex too and that there’s so much more to being male than just strength, risk-taking and winning.

Could be destined for greatness?

Having a birthday so close to Christmas and in the gloomiest months of the year isn’t considered a winning combination for some, but did you know that according to a recent survey, those with an Aquarius star sign are more likely to be rich and famous than any other star sign?

The study conducted by Journal of Social Sciences found that a large number of Hollywood stars were born between 20 January and 18 February.

The researchers selected random people from a range of different walks of life, including politicians, authors, sports icons, singers, actors, and celebrities. They found Aquarius to be the zodiac when most of the celebrities were born.

How to figure out your next career move

If you’re stuck in a career rut and want to make a career change, but aren’t sure in which direction, try these tips to help you figure out your next move.

  1. Take note of what you do and don’t enjoy in your current job. Make sure the bits you’re enthused about are key in your next role.
  2. Apply your passions to your professional life. Can you turn your hobby or your side hustle into your main job? Look at those who have gone before you for inspiration to how to make it work.
  3. As well as being introspective, find out what else there is out there. Schedule coffee meetings with people from different industries and do some fact finding.

3 top tips to improve your CV

If 2019 is the year you get your dream job, you’ll have to start applying for it. And for that you’ll need a competitive CV.

  1. Make it easy to read. Include clear formatting, short paragraphs and key statistics that are separated from the rest of the text and bulleted.
  2. Trim off the excess. Employers want to read what is relevant to them, so only include the juicy bits that make you interesting enough to warrant calling in for an interview.
  3. Include keywords. Figure out what keywords for this job are and liberally apply them throughout your CV. Chances are software will sift the first round of CVs so make sure yours makes the cut.

Botox and mental health

High Street retailer Superdrug is to introduce tougher mental health checks before dishing out lunchtime cosmetic procedures after receiving criticism on its lackadaisical approach to mental health disorders.

According to NHS sources, after Superdrug started offering Botox and dermal fillers last year, the health service was left to pick up the pieces for many mental health fallouts following procedures.

The NHS is concerned that pressures on young people’s mental health are so tough, that allowing those who are mentally unwell easy access to a procedure that will compound their illness rather than help it, is just irresponsible.

Superdrug have responded saying they are fully committed to the issue.

The planetary health diet

A new, revolutionary diet claiming it could prevent millions of deaths a year and help avoid climate change, has been unveiled.

This planetary health diet was created by an international commission and is the first science-based diet that actively tackles both the poor food eaten by billions of people around the world and the imminent global environmental catastrophe.

The diet requires a huge reduction in the consumption of red meat and sugar in western countries and the intake of vegetables, fruit, pulses and nuts to double.

Any preference for Planetary Health Diet month?

Avoid these 5 home improvement projects

Home improvement shows have a lot to answer for. They make DIY look much easier than it actually is, and most people find that projects take longer to complete than expected. Also, the amount of prep work required before you even start a project tends to be overlooked and the complexity and cost of the work involved.

In a study of DIYers who were disappointed with their efforts, 55% of respondents said the finished project just didn’t look good.

Heed their advice, steer clear of these supposedly easy jobs, and call in the professionals instead.

  1. Replacing a ceiling
  2. Installing hardwood floors
  3. Installing carpets
  4. Installing showers and baths
  5. Painting home interiors

Why men’s fashion is on the rise

Fashion week, typically thought of as a display of the latest lines of female focussed fashion in New York, London and Paris is having a renaissance.

Whilst fashion in recent years has mainly been presented as an artform and worn by only the slimmest, tallest, most striking of women, there is no shortage of men involved in the process. So it isn’t wholly unexpected to see men’s fashion be given the time of day it so rightly deserves.

The rise in male fashion is most likely to be credited to the recent shift in collective cultural attitudes towards the idea of gender. That and it is now considered socially acceptable for men to take pride in their appearance.
