Quit sugar with Cancer Research UK for February

Quit sugar for a month, all in the name of a great cause because:

  1. You’ll feel better for cutting out the white stuff.
  2. You’ll naturally increase the amount of healthy foods you eat. Because you’ll be making a conscious effort not to eat sugar, you’ll be thinking about what you can put in your body. And because you’re actively choosing not to eat junk food, you’ll be actively choosing healthier options.
  3. It’ll help you maintain a healthy weight. If you reduce your sugar intake, you’ll be avoiding those extra, empty calories that can contribute to weight gain.

3 Top European city break destinations

  1. Rome.

Rome’s mild climate makes this city a draw all year round, plus it is a living museum with a pulsating energy that is hard to beat. There are so many great trattorias to discover, shops to browse and a buzzing nightlife.

  1. Madrid.

Madrid has had a makeover in recent years. The Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums are all bigger and better, whilst the centre of the city is awash with delightful delis, cafés and gastrobars.

  1. Paris.

Just a hop, skip and a jump across the channel and you’re in one of the most romantic cities on the planet, as well as one of the most beautiful.

How to get on the property ladder in 2019

With Brexit and all its uncertainty looming ominously in the background, getting on the property ladder can seem like a risky business, but it isn’t if you are sensible.

  1. Set a savings goal. Saving for a deposit is one of the biggest hurdles for first time buyers, so start saving early and wisely.
  2. Don’t underestimate the cost of moving. You’ve found the house, don’t let it slip away from you now. Remember the added extras like removal firms, estate agent fees and surveyors.
  3. Know how much you can afford. Don’t overstretch yourself unnecessarily, interest rates can go up and the last thing you want is to not be able to meet mortgage repayments.

How to reduce stress through diet

Diet and nutrition affect your stress levels by increasing or decreasing the levels of hormones in your body.

  1. Drink a warm drink.

Sometimes the physical effects of food and drink play a greater role in our well being than the nutritional content. Naturally comforting, warm drinks help calm us down regardless of what they are.

  1. Eat carbohydrates.

Carbs increase our levels of serotonin, the chemical naturally found in our body that boosts our mood and reduces our stress levels.

  1. Tuck into avocados.

Naturally high in omega 3 fatty acids, these nutritional little powerhouses contain healthy amino acids that reduce stress and anxiety.

3 Things to buy for your baby (and beg or borrow)

Preparing for the new arrival will be as expensive at you’ll let it, but expanding your family doesn’t have to cost the earth.

Buy. Invest in a good changing table, one that you don’t have to bend over. You’ll be changing a lot of nappies, may as well make it a comfortable experience.

Beg. Always beg or borrow baby clothes. Babies grow so quickly, it doesn’t matter how cute the expensive outfit is, it’ll never get the wears required to justify its cost.

Borrow. You can never have enough muslins – for posset, spills, snot or other bodily fluids. These are worth their weight in gold.

How to get ahead on work when you’re behind

Everyone wishes there were more hours in the day, but actually there is more time, if you just know where to look.

  1. Wake up earlier. Discover an extra hour before work. Get up and make a to do list for your day ahead. Schedule your biggest priorities for the morning thereby leaving yourself more flexibility for unexpected surprises or over runs.
  2. Maximise your commute. Listen to an educational podcast, read an industry specific journal, send emails before you hit the office. Get ahead whilst you’re getting to work.
  3. Don’t wait on hold. Put the phone on handsfree and carry on with your day whilst you wait. Create templates for common email responses to save even more time.

Why the emotional responsibility of being a mother can be damaging to a woman’s mental health

If you’re a woman, you’ll have experienced emotional responsibility at some point in your life, whether that was choosing your boyfriend’s christmas present for his mother or simply organising the weekly food shop.

But a new study published in the journal Sex Roles, found that the burden of round-the-clock responsibilities of being a mother and the emotional responsibilities of raising children, is damaging women’s mental health.

Yes, more men are doing housework and helping raise children than ever before, but women are still managing the household, even when they’re employed.

This invisible labour was linked to feelings of being overwhelmed and a sense of emptiness.
