2 London fitness studios you have to try

  1. F45

Their classes are addictive and because they’re opening up more studios to accomodate more members all the time, getting your next fix is all too easy.

Not sure about the type of training they provide? The name tells you all: F is for functional training i.e. high-intensity circuits, and the 45 stands for the length of time of the classes.

  1. Digme Ride 101

This studio is for you if you want to try spinning but have always been put off by the assumed knowledge associated with spinning. They place a strong emphasis on ensuring there is a relaxed atmosphere by stripping back the intimidating nature of spinning.

Did you know stress and weight are linked?

According to the University of Gothenburg, after conducting a study involving over 3,800 women, women are predisposed to gain weight when stressed. So if your job is super stressful, that could be a reason why you’re struggling with those extra few pounds. And no, the same doesn’t apply to men sadly.

The study was conducted over a 20 year period and investigated the links between body weight and demands and control at work. According to Sofia Klingberg, the study’s lead author, access to education, lifestyle and dietary choices did not explain the findings of the study.

Sugar Alternatives

If you’re quitting sugar for February, but you have a super sweet tooth, you’ll want to know what alternatives there are available.

1. Xylitol. Also known as birch sugar. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol and is widely used as a sugar substitute. It has 40% fewer calories than sugar and doesn’t cause your blood sugar levels to spike. Xylitol is a natural constituent of some vegetables and fruits, and is naturally occuring in our bodies themselves. Replace it like for like with ordinary sugar.
2. Honey. One of the oldest natural sweeteners in the world. As well as being anti-inflammatory, it is also a known antiseptic and for its antibacterial properties.

Why you should try sleeping like a baby

A new study has shown that if we are rocked to sleep, like we do babies, we would reap huge benefits. Researchers at the University of Geneva built a special bed that rocked gently throughout the night and when they tested it on young adults, they found the sleepers woke up fewer times during the night and reportedly slept more deeply than on a normal bed.

Not only would we benefit from better sleep in a rocking bed, but we’d also improve our memory too, as the rocking motion results in deeper sleep which aids memory.

3 practices that will make you happier at work

  1. Create a positive environment by surrounding yourself with things and activities that make you happy.
  2. Seek out constructive criticism to encourage your self improvement. Whether that be soft or hard skills, having a trusted colleague honestly tell you where you might be lacking is better than hearing it via a boss during a review.
  3. Take time to clear your mind each day. Whether that’s through mindfulness or tuning out with a podcast, taking time for you will mitigate against burnout.

How to find the perfect babysitter

Sometimes you have to rely on outside help to watch the little one, but how do you find that person?

  1. Ask for recommendations. Most parents have been in your situation and will have sitters they can recommend.
  2. Ask your childminder or nursery if they offer babysitting services.
  3. Check for experience and training with little ones. A good rule of thumb is the younger your baby, the older the babysitter should be. The best sitters will have childcare qualifications and be trained in infant CPR and first aid.
  4. Always check references. If they aren’t offered to you, don’t be afraid to ask for them, and always follow them up.

Teaching your child the value of sharing

Teaching your child to share is essentially teaching them to be kind. Learning to share can be tough for young children, but it is an essential skill they must master if they want to make and keep friends.

Most children learn they learn from their parents, so set good examples.

  1. They might not understand the concept of sharing at first, so point out when someone shares.
  2. Give praise when you see them sharing.
  3. Play games with your children that encourage sharing and turn taking.
  4. Let them know that they don’t have to share everything, some toys are just for them, and that’s ok too.
