Tea and coffee are two of the most widely consumed drinks in the world, with water topping the list. They both give you more energy, and they taste great, but it seems more and more coffee drinkers are making the switch to tea. Here’s why you should join the movement:
Tea was first used as a medicinal drink in China in the 1500s where it was said to heal wounds, control bleeding, aid digestion and improve mental health. And today, 500 years later, we’re still reaping these rewards.
In more recent years, drinking tea has been discovered to assist with an abundance of other health ailments as well. That includes boosting mood and productivity.
Although it’s something tea drinkers have known for a long time, science is catching up and there are studies to back these health benefits. Researchers have found that drinking tea lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and drinking at least half a cup of green tea a day is said to lower the risk of developing dementia and depression.
So how does it work?
Tea is loaded with antioxidants, along with catechins, plant polyphenols, and phytochemicals that have been found to fight diseases such as cancer, and boost the metabolism, and of course, impacts your brain health.
One of the common antioxidants include epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is believed to improve attention and make people feel calm.
Theanine is an amino acid in tea that triggers alpha waves in the brain, and similar to EGCG, it creates a feeling of relaxation and reducing stress. On the other hand, caffeine in tea increases your reaction time and alertness, but because there isn’t as much caffeine in tea as you’ll find in coffee you don’t end up crashing from the high afterwards. The theanine helps to counteract that stimulation, decreasing stress and lowering blood pressure.
It’s this magic combination that keeps your concentration up and helps you to combat fatigue at the same time. And it’s precisely for this reason that monks drink tea before they meditate!
Does it matter which tea?
All tea has health benefits, but they vary, so it depends on what you’re looking for. When it comes to boosting productivity and enhancing your mood, Matcha tea is one of the most effective. This tea is grown in Japan and China primarily and is a type of green tea that reduces the amount of stress you have in your body and gives you sustained energy.
Another type of green tea is Yerba Mate, which keeps you energised and focused and can improve your mood. To beat stress, Valerian tea is a game changer, as well as Ginger tea, which makes you warm and relaxes the mind. Essentially, there are many types of wellness tea that can help boost your mood and productivity. Whatever choice you make, replacing your usual morning coffee with a cuppa tea instead is a great way to boost your day.
PMS is a fickle beast. Some days, a slice of pizza is enough to curb the cravings. On others, the overwhelming need to polish off the Lindt Excellence wins out. But believe it or not, there are foods that can help ease some of your symptoms without causing a spike in your blood sugar.
Enter, turmeric.
In a recent clinical trial, researchers looked at curcumin (the main compound of turmeric) and its effect on the main emotional, physical and behavioural characteristics of PMS (e.g. irritability, anxiety, headaches, cramping, fatigue and a lack of energy.)
Each participant supplemented with two capsules of curcumin daily for seven days before menstruation and for three days after menstruation, recording the severity of their symptoms via questionnaire. Over three successive cycles, they reported a significant decrease in symptoms, suggesting that the spice may be effective in treating PMS.
Experts put this down to its anti-inflammatory effects, as many PMS symptoms are related to inflammation (period pain, especially).
“Take the time before each meal to stop and breathe, just enough time for three deep diaphragmatic breaths. In through your nose, deep into your gut, observing the rise and fall of your belly and ribs. Oxygenating your digestive system, expanding and releasing the tightness that you may feel through the chest throughout the day or leading up to your meal and most important to help the body switch off the sympathetic ‘flight or fight’ nervous system and allow the parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ nervous system to take the front seat.
When we are stressed or anxious, we don’t firstly enjoy the meal, and our bodies being in sympathetic mode means we don’t digest it well. Taking these three big breaths before eating eases our body into a more restful state to enjoy and digest our meal.”
Eat the rainbow.
Eat a balanced diet and incorporate foods high in tryptophan, magnesium, omega-3 and vitamin-E & D. Say what? Here’s how.
“Tryptophan is needed to make serotonin, which regulates your mood and cannot be produced in the human body alone. Incorporate tryptophan-containing foods into your diet may ease anxiety, foods such as oats, cottage cheese, turkey, eggs, bananas and tofu are high in tryptophan. Magnesium is a mineral that assists muscles and nerves in relaxing. Foods rich in magnesium are leafy greens such as spinach, swiss chard. Also legumes, avocado and brown rice are high too. Omega-3 is another great one to boost, make Salmon, mackerel, sardines and eggs your go-to to up your omega-3 intake. Lastly, load up on nuts such as pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts and almonds, a handful a day is a great start.”
Drink the good stuff.
“Keep hydrated with water by drinking at least 2-3 litres throughout the day. Enjoy a fermented beverage at mealtime. At night time, opt for a calming tea such as chamomile to help put your nervous system into rest mode.”
Don’t mix food with emotions.
“Eating when emotional then creates an emotionally complicated relationship with your food – don’t use it as your crutch. Emotional eating creates issues far more significant than what you were dealing with, perhaps when you opened the fridge door or block of chocolate.
Try working with breath before leaning on food. Or try going for a walk, putting your feet up against the wall, having a cold shower or jumping in the ocean, cuddling your partner, brother, sister, best friend, dog or jumping into bed and have a big ugly cry, but please, don’t make food your counsel. Whether eating it or starving yourself from it, trying to resolve temporary issues or emotions with food only creates a damaged connection with it and your health long term.”
