SKINCARE TIPS FOR A GLOWING COMPLEXION

KEEP IT CLEAN

If using a foam-based wash or cleansing gel, the product should be applied with your fingertips directly to damp skin. This should be done for as long as it takes to generate lather and target all areas of facial skin.

Consider double-cleansing. This removes sweat, bacteria and old skin cells, as usual, then a second round of cleansing will clean much deeper into the pores to remove any impurities. While there are no rigorous scientific trials that show the anti-ageing benefits of double cleansing, there is plenty of evidence that suggests pollution and environmental toxins can accelerate the ageing process.

Taking at least a minute to do a water-based cleanse will ensure you gain all the benefits from your cleanser and its ingredients. On average, most people only spend about twenty seconds on cleansing, which isn’t enough time to massage the cleanser in properly.

We need to be sensible about cleansing, as over-washing can lead to dryness, sensitivity and irritation – rather than a glowing complexion. The ideal cleanser should be sulphate-free to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils, and it’s important not to rub the skin too harshly.

TREAT AND PROTECT

There are a number of reasons our skin starts to sag. Firstly, there is a reduction in the levels of collagen and elastin, which provide the skin’s structural support. This occurs due to factors such as exposure to UV rays. Secondly, there is a loss of facial fat, the absence of which causes the face to droop. Lastly, there is reabsorption or loss of bone of the face over time and the skin can no longer tighten around it resulting in sag.

Always wearing an SPF, ideally of at least factor 30, is a simple step to take to get that glowing complexion, as it is key for protecting against UV rays. Ultraviolet is a key culprit in ageing skin and one of the primary reasons skin loses its elasticity.

Secondly, invest in antioxidant serums that include ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, resveratrol that can limit free radical damage caused by UV light but also improve sunscreen action.

Thirdly, use a night-time retinoid product. Retinoids have been shown in trials to improve collagen production and reduce pigmentation over time. I am sceptical of products that claim to lift and tighten skin that has already started to sag. There is little scientific evidence that firming products have any profound, lasting effects on the skin.

There are skin tightening treatments that you can get done by a professional such as radiofrequency and ultrasound devices. Both methods are thought to promote collagen production over time resulting in a reduction of skin laxity. These treatments are reasonably low key and have a short recovery time, however, multiple treatments are usually necessary and there can be temporary redness, swelling or numbness following a procedure. As always, talk to a professional before undertaking any kind of new treatment.

STAY HYDRATED

Dark circles have a number of causes but using brightening agents around the eye such as vitamin C, as well as peptides and caffeine may help to a limited degree, and get you that bit closer to achieving a dewy, glowing complexion. If, however, the dark circles are due to a loss of facial fat underneath the eye, then no amount of topical eye cream will reduce the appearance of the shadow which may develop. This is because treatments are unable to penetrate deep enough into the skin.

Keep fully hydrated, particularly during the warmer months or if you are suffering from sunburn. The skin also loses more water content as we sleep which can be a problem for normal or dry skin types. Always ensure you moisturise before bed as this is when your skin needs its extra moisture. Drinking a lot of water will not help with fine lines and wrinkles, however – a common myth that often gets thrown about.

FINESSE YOUR ROUTINE

Using multiple layers of products is not necessary for everyone seeking out that glowing complexion. It may be helpful in those with extremely dry skin, but it’s important to bear in mind that the more products that are used, the higher the chance of developing irritation or potentially even acne in susceptible skin types.

Your skincare routine should reflect your skin type. Cleanse twice a day with a cream cleanser or micellar water, and exfoliate to remove the upper layer of dead skin cells – this improves the skin’s texture, age spots and uneven skin tone which ultimately allows for better penetration of skincare products such as moisturisers or serums. Facial toners also have a number of positive roles in skincare – they can remove excess oils and makeup and balance the pH of your skin. Toners are useful for those with very oily or ac

ne-prone skin. They should be applied to a cotton pad and wiped over the skin surface. Serums contain high concentrations of active ingredients and should be used before moisturisers. They are fast-acting and lightweight. A few drops is plenty and applying to damp skin may increase their penetration – because damp skin is more permeable to products.

DON’T FORGET THE NECK

The skin on the neck is much thinner than the skin on the face, so it loses elasticity  and is one of the most noticeable signs of ageing. The neck has less of a support structure than the face, which leaves it prone to wrinkles, sagging and uneven skin tone. Many people still neglect the neck area, despite having a thorough skin care regime for their face, so treat them as one unit.

Despite there being numerous neck creams on the market, there’s no singular, quick-fix, anti-ageing ingredient specifically for this area. Just invest in high-quality face products and incorporate your neck into your daily skincare routine.

BEST HEALTH, WELLNESS, LIFESTYLE AND FITNESS APPS

Best for: Sleep hygiene

Sleep Cycle

Let’s face it, we’re all curious. As much as we want an app that helps solve any sleep irregularity patterns – or indeed outright insomnia – we’re even more excited to know what goes “bump” in the night. While we’re in the land of nod, we want to know when we tossed, turned, yelled out and when our nasal systems resembled that of a chainsaw. Seriously though, this app has some solid science behind it and is designed to wake you up at your ultimate prime time – such as when your sleep is at its most shallow and thus avoiding grouchiness.

.

Best for: Pounding the pavements

Strava

Gone are the days of clicking a rusty old stopwatch and arguing who flashed by first. Seeing how many miles you’ve clocked up during your daily jog is of massive interest to the individual and it’s even better when you can record it automatically. From the marathon runner to the novice plodder, Strava provides all the stats and analysis that runners need – trackers, speed, distance and so on.

Continuing to be one of the most popular running and cycling apps, one of its main features is it can link together like-minded fitness fanatics via social media. There’s nothing like a bit of competition even during solo runs, comparing and ‘bantering’ with those who’ve pounded those same pavements. And then uploaded it. A good thing is this way, they don’t have to tell the rest of the world on their status updates…

Best for: Self therapy

Talk It Out

Counselling has never been so in demand, but there simply aren’t enough qualified professionals to cope with the numbers needing help with their mental health – and besides, many of us are resistant to the therapist’s couch. This new app is such a big deal that it is looking quite probable that it will be rolled out by the NHS themselves.

The premise is that you talk to yourself for just 10 minutes a day, with prompts from the app, to unlock what is in your subconscious to help problem solving and relieve anxiety. In a pilot study, 70% of the those who talked to themselves for just 10 minutes a day over 10 days saw a meaningful positive change, moving from the ‘possible depression’ range to experiencing good to high mental wellbeing. And we cannot argue with that. It’s good to talk, eh?

Best for: Mixing up your workouts

Aaptiv

Yes, there are many good exercise apps, but how many are likely to stop you from giving up on your resolutions after day 3? Personalised audio ones have a fair shout, no doubt. Intentions are all fine and well and admirable, but from time to time one needs extra motivation and an app such as this can be a reasonable substitute for a personal trainer at a tiny fraction of the cost.

Aaptiv comes with added-in music to suit whatever workout you’re indulging in, tracks your performance and recommends different routines and workouts based on questions, goals and availability. There are demonstration videos, for those ever so tricky stretches for which gym wall diagrams never suffice.

Best for: Meditation

Headspace

Buddhist monks have been doing it for centuries, so there must be something in it and it can now be practiced by app. And of course, without the strict vows of silence and starving rituals you might find in a temple somewhere on the outskirts of Bangkok.

A popular award-winning app, Headspace has a host of celebrity endorsements. There’s a large catalogue of music, sounds, courses and even meditative story-telling sleepcasts.

It is easy to use and even for those who have never practiced meditation before, there are beginner courses. So good in fact, it is best not to stick it on while driving down the M6.

Best for: Staying safe when out walking

True, there’s enough walking apps to shake a stick at. However, is there actually one that does more than just record how many steps you took and how long you were rambling? There is, and it’s also much more than just stats. It’s as much for your wellbeing and safety.

Follo is a free app that allows you to plan your route and set your destination. So how is it health and safety conscious? It ‘checks in’ on you. Yes, it uses four safety settings, (non-movement, irregular direction, too fast or disconnection) to check in on you if something unusual happens while the app is activated. If you are unresponsive, the app triggers an automated message system to alert your pre-selected key contacts via SMS. Clever!

When walking, stuff happens. Inclement weather and accidents being top of the list, unfortunately. A quick installation of Follo and you’ll never need to worry about “letting them know” again.

Best for: Self diagnosis

Healthtap

“Don’t Google it.” “Worst thing you can do.” “Go to the doctors”. We’ve all heard them, yet we all still can’t resist keying in a few symptoms to only wait in fear of our good friend Google throwing up the ‘C word’.

It’s not just the hypochondriacs amongst us, it could be the opposite – trying to adjust search terms to get to the point where you’re simply suffering from an ingrown toenail.

This app takes all this into account and provides worriers and complacent procrastinators with qualified answers. If you need extra help, you can pay for the added benefits of consultations.

Best For: Keeping your nutrition in check

Lifesum

Imagine your grandmother slaving away with a rolling pin, and then breaking off every so often to tap away at an iPhone while shaking her head at the newfangled idea she was being presented with.

Nutrition is a whole different ball game than in granny’s era. The science has moved up many a level. What hasn’t increased quite so much is the effort most are prepared to put in, checking labels for protein, carbs and fat content.

Lifesum has therefore created an app to make all this easier. This is an app which identifies goals, tracks the amount of water, fruit and veg consumed, creates meal plans and has over a thousand tasty easy recipes with the nutritional information one requires. There’s even a barcode scanner to make logging the items even easier

The interface is very user-friendly so it’s not surprising Lifesum and its award-winning app is gaining more and more traction.

Best for: Motivation – and treats

RewardDays

New Year’s resolutions are broken, on average, within the first week. Why? Because in terms of active habits that we vowed to pursue, we’re lazy sods, simple as that. In terms of giving things up, it’s the ‘won’t’ power that we lack, not ‘will’ power. However, what if there were incentives? An actual app that rewarded those who’ve managed to endure consecutive days without their cream cake or their well-earned vino. Well there is.

RewardDays is a bad habit tracker app that rewards ‘good behaviour’ by offering up various discounts, vouchers and more on quality healthy products to replace the bad ones. The brains behind it have teamed up with various partners to offer up these rewards too, which should be the perfect motivation. Reward yourself with the RewardDays app, which will reward you again.

Best for: Fitting in fitness

Wakeout

Not your typical workout or exercise app. It’s ok wanting to look like a footballer, swimmer or tennis player but most of us haven’t the motivation or the time, let’s be truthful about it. All these sporting super athletes are paid millions to be in shape. We aren’t.

Wakeout is designed for those who simply can’t get a routine together, be it because of time or money. With its four categories to plan a workout, it is designed to fit exercise around work, utilise the items around your home, pump iron outdoors or engage in activities whilst travelling. With demos aplenty, and decent feedback, it’s a must have app for the busy person.

Best for: Yoga for all

Glo

Walk around your local exercise emporium and inevitably you’ll walk past a see-through room with big glass windows and experience rows of leotard wearing Nijinsky types, all coordinated, all sweating. Any thoughts of ever joining these fine specimens are quashed under a sudden heap of low self-esteem. That, folks, is why the Glo app was invented.

One of the most popular yoga apps with a rich variety of videos, Glo offers yoga lessons at all levels, so it doesn’t matter if you’re an expert or a plumber with two left feet.

Special features involve the body filters, enabling specific parts to be targeted. And for those who still want the buzz, there’s also a live class option.

Best for: Life admin

TickTick

Nope, not a misprint which is undoubtedly what everyone might think at first. In fact it couldn’t be further from the dance-crazed social media shenanigans.

This is arguably a more productive use of one’s time. A ‘kill two birds’ type application. Imagine a ‘to-do’ list combined with a habit tracking feature. Of course, this is 2022 which means gone are the days of leaking biros and sticky post-it-notes falling everywhere.

We like simple, and that’s the beauty of what is basically an advanced ‘task manager’. Organise your schedules at home or at work and get things done more efficiently.

Best for: Breathwork

Breath Hub

Bringing hundreds of teachers, experts, and schools all together in this one platform, if you’ve always thought learning to breathe better would have a positive impact on your mental health, but didn’t know where to start, Breath Hub brings you all manner of different sessions to calm your mind and focus on different themes and purposes.

WHAT YOUR CRAVINGS ARE TELLING YOU ABOUT YOUR BODY

Having cravings isn’t a bad thing. In fact, they are sometimes a good indication that you’re not getting the nourishment you’re seeking – which may actually not have anything to do with food.

Learning to listen to your body and the clues it is giving you is a vital part of health and wellbeing.  So we shouldn’t view giving into cravings as weaknesses. We should instead see our cravings as important messages from our body meant to help us maintain balance.

How to listen to your body’s cravings

When you experience a craving, instead of feeling negative about it or trying to ignore it, what if we instead thanked our body for doing its job and giving us this important message, and then tried to unravel and deconstruct it? Ask yourself, “What is my body trying to tell me?”

A craving might be a message from your body that it is seeking a particular food to promote health and well-being (e.g. nourishing soups when you’re not feeling well), but cravings can also be precipitated by your emotional state, physiological state, diet, routine, or even your surroundings. When cravings arise, they can be a symptom indicating an imbalance occurring – investigating cravings is a great opportunity to treat the cause, not the symptom.

Being aware of the different factors that may contribute to cravings can help you explore the choices that are best for you – if that’s eating some ice cream, that’s great; if that’s opting for carrot sticks, that’s also great. Maybe it’s even setting aside time to unwind.

Cravings are something we all experience from time to time – so how can we listen to what our body is trying to tell us and use cravings to our advantage?

1. ACKNOWLEDGE THE CRAVINGS

If cravings arise, acknowledge them and give them space. Ignoring cravings often makes them seem stronger and more powerful. When you make foods you want off-limits, it usually has the opposite effect. Rather than leading you to forget the “off-limit” foods, you end up preoccupied and less equipped to control yourself when you’re around them.

In this case, mindfully acknowledging and fulfilling a craving may be more productive than actively trying to avoid it. The simple act of acknowledging your craving also may help reduce its power and allow you to dissociate from it.

2. WORK OUT WHY YOU’RE HAVING THEM

It is a complex area, and there are many other factors that could be involved, such as hormonal fluctuations, whether you exercised the day before, if you are getting enough of certain nutrients, seasonal change, and even if you are feeling satisfied in your career or relationship. There are many causes that can make navigating cravings seem tricky, however, gaining a deeper understanding of how cravings work allows you to mindfully respond to your bio-individual cravings.

In exploring the origin of your cravings, ask yourself the following questions:

Is this craving occurring alongside a particular emotion or physical feeling?
Stress, fatigue, loneliness, and even boredom can lead to particular food cravings. In these cases, food won’t solve the problem – it would be treating a symptom, which works in the short-term but probably isn’t in your best interest in the long-term. Making this distinction can be an empowering feeling. It allows you to pinpoint and treat the actual cause, which is likely to promote the balance you’re seeking. Although there are many physical and emotional feelings that may lead you to crave particular foods, fatigue and stress are most common.

When people are tired, they not only eat more but are also more likely to make poor dietary choices. Sleep-deprived individuals are more likely to crave snacks and consume more calories over the course of the day. Lack of sleep has been shown to increase cravings for calorie-dense foods.

The more stressed people are, the more they tend to look for comfort in food – this is just one of the ways that stress leads to weight gain. During stressful times, cravings for energy-dense, less nutritious foods are common. Including an activity that helps you manage stress efficiently can have a major impact on your dietary choices.

Is this craving for a highly palatable food?
In order to make an empowered choice about foods, it’s important to know that certain foods –  called highly palatable foods – are designed to be craved. Of course, it’s fine to enjoy these foods, but part of being empowered in navigating your cravings is being aware of the power that some of these foods may hold.

If it feels like you’re craving sugar, you may be seeking a quick source of energy (it could actually be another symptom of lack of sleep), but research has shown that the more sugar people consume, the more they prefer it. In a way, you build up a tolerance to sugar – requiring you to seek out more concentrated sources or consume larger amounts to create the same pleasurable eating experience that it originally produced.

Processed foods are designed to make consumers crave them. In fact, the food industry created what has been described as the “bliss point” – the perfect combination of sugar, salt, and fat that makes processed foods difficult to resist. Frequent exposure to these types of foods is likely to increase the desire for them. These craved foods tend to be higher in calories and fat and lower in protein and fibre – they usually don’t offer a lot of nutritional value aside from energy.

Is this craving tied to a habit?
Sometimes people simply desire a food or snack because they’re used to having it at a certain time or place. In other words, you may gravitate towards a particular food out of routine. For example, it’s common for people to feel a drop in energy in the late afternoon and reach for sugary snacks or drinks. Eventually, you may start craving snacks during this time of day simply out of habit.

Rather than going on autopilot, take a moment to tune into your body. A brief moment of mindfulness may be enough to help you distinguish between craving something out of habit versus craving due to actual hunger or a desire to mindfully and intentionally enjoy a particular food.

Is this craving guiding me toward a food that would support my health or wellbeing?
Have you ever taken a trip where you enjoyed frequently dining out and eating rich foods and then come home and craved something highly nourishing, like a big salad with lots of fresh, colourful vegetables? This is your body’s attempt to return to balance.

Fulfilling a craving may also contribute to your wellbeing beyond a nutritional standpoint. For example, craving a piece of cake to enjoy among friends and family might provide a strong feeling of connection and love. This can be a powerful form of emotional nourishment.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, certain foods are more yin (expansive), while others are more yang (contractive). Within this theory, foods that are too yin or too yang may lead you to crave the opposite in an attempt to maintain balance. This theory suggests eating foods that are more neutral (like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans) and avoiding extremes on either end that may lead to cravings. For example, eating a diet rich in sugar (yin) may cause a craving for meat (yang) and eating too many raw foods (yin) may cause cravings for heavily cooked foods (yang).

Cravings often come from foods you’ve recently eaten or foods from your childhood. Recently eaten foods tend to be fresh in your mind, so you’re more likely to crave that food in an attempt to re-create a positive eating experience. Similarly, when you crave foods from your childhood, you may really be seeking the feeling of comfort those foods may have provided when you were younger.

3. PROCEED FROM A PLACE OF EMPOWERMENT

Once you acknowledge your craving and determine its origin, you give yourself the power to un-identify with it and determine how to proceed in a way that is best for you. Listen to what your body is telling you and enjoy exploring the deeper message that may exist in some of your cravings. Rather than feeling controlled by cravings, the empowered approach allows you to be a curious investigator seeking out the best choice for you at the time – don’t forget, we’re always changing.

Consider cravings as a yardstick to determine if things are out of balance. Whether food will ease that craving or if there’s another form of nourishment your body is seeking that comes from off your plate, respect and acknowledge your bio-individual cravings as they come up.

Remember, your body loves you unconditionally and does everything it can to keep you alive and functioning. You can deprive it of sleep, but it will still get you up and running the next morning. You can drink too much alcohol, and it will still process it through your system. Next time you experience a craving, try to think of your body as a crying baby who needs tenderness and love. The baby can’t talk, so it’s up to you to respond with love and compassion and try to figure out what’s wrong. That’s the first step to building a mutually loving relationship.
